St. John Properties and The Arbors at Baltimore Crossroads to Donate $15,000 to Baltimore County Police Athletic League

BALTIMORE (February 8, 2011) – St. John Properties, Inc., together with The Arbors at Baltimore Crossroads, will present a check today for $15,000 to the Baltimore County Police Athletic League (PAL), at 3:30 pm at the Cockeysville PAL Center, located at 9835 Greenside Drive, Cockeysville, MD. Including today’s contribution, a total of $50,000 will have been donated from the race event to the PAL organization over the past three years. A number of business executives and local officials are expected to participate, including Dr. Nancy Grasmick, Maryland State Superintendent of Schools; Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz; Jim Johnson, Chief, Baltimore County Police Department; and PJ Widerman, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Baltimore County Police Athletic League.

The donation represents a portion of the proceeds generated from last fall’s 3rd Annual Baltimore Crossroads@95 5K CrossCountry Challenge Race, in which approximately 1,000 individuals along with nearly 70 exhibitors took part. The Maryland State School System played an integral role in the event and six Baltimore County Public Schools participated, including Eastern Technical High School, Parkville High School, Parkville Middle School, Perry Hall High School, Perry Hall Middle School, and Pine Grove Middle School. The race offered categories and classifications for various audiences and groups, as well as a family-oriented one-mile walk or run.

The $15,000 donation directly benefits Baltimore County PAL centers which, since 1977, have provided a safe, constructive alternative to idleness for many youngsters throughout the region. PAL centers are staffed by Baltimore County police officers and recreation coordinators who, along with community volunteers, work to enhance young people’s self esteem and moral development through enjoyable activities. The PAL program also offers homework centers, tutorial assistance, craft programs and other activities designed to expand its members’ intellectual and imaginative abilities.

“The 5K event is an excellent example of a private-public partnership that consistently works to provide direct benefits to the local community,” explained Ed St. John, Founder and President of St. John Properties, Inc. “Over the course of many months in preparation for the race, organizations such as the Baltimore County Police Department, the Maryland School System and the Maryland Air National Guard selflessly invested their time to assure a first-class presentation of this event. Each person involved in the organization and execution understands the tangible and meaningful programs that we are helping support.”

“We very much appreciate the continued generosity of St. John Properties and The Arbors at Baltimore Crossroads,” stated Chief Jim Johnson, Baltimore County Police Department. “Partnerships such as these, linking the private sector and the Police Department, represent a tremendous asset as we continue to work to enhance the services we provide area youth.”

“The PAL program has proven to be a vital and positive influence on an increasing number of youth residing in Baltimore County, and this donation will have a major and significant impact on the continuation of this important program,” said PJ Widerman, PAL Board Chair.

“It was gratifying and exciting to see the enthusiasm exhibited by the students and teachers that participated in the 5K race. We are extremely proud of our role in this endeavor, and we fully realize the positive impact that we are making in the local community. This is the perfect example of community service and giving back to our neighborhoods,” stated Dr. Nancy Grasmick, Maryland State Superintendent of Schools.
